Charlie Marshall designed this gorgeous creation inspired by his love for vintage advertising. The word ‘Mondo’ is Italian for ‘World’ and ‘Mondo Island’ was where King Kong was discovered in “King Kong Escapes’ (1962). We really liked this gorilla and spent a happy time reading and looking at the detail in the print, carefully selected and put together by the artist. In some of the photos he looks like he is black and white but he is in fact green and white when you stand next to him. One of my favourites!
Here are some photos of some of the details on his body. Images from another time and many references to gorillas and apes at the Zoo.
I like the one of the people shopping particularly, it’s not really that long ago, or maybe I’m just getting old, but I remember people dressed like this in my childhood, particularly the hats.
